ROMANIA: CARPATHIAN CHAMOIS HUNT

Chamois season is open from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30. The optimal time to hunt would be from mid Sept. to mid Nov. Weather conditions are generally pleasant before snow accumulates in the alpine. The rut occurs in Nov.

Additional Chamois - Not always possible and subject to permit availability.
Roe Deer - Flat-rates with no size restrictions & the season is open until mid Oct.
Wild Boars - Either be taken as targets of opportunity, or hunted over bait or with thermals.
Fallow Deer – A popular second species in Oct., comes with relocation but extra days needed.
Red Stag - Can be booked as a primary species with optimal roar dates in mid-late Sept.
Pheasants – Half day ventures for wild birds can be added Oct. - Nov. with relocation.

These hunts come standard at 4 full days professionally 1x1 guided. Greet your guide each morning and depart into the mountain with the aim to be in a strategic glassing spot around dawn. In classic mountain hunt fashion, hunts span all day and lunch is in the field. Conduct short hikes to known areas where Chamois frequent and glass to find and judge mature billies. Once a shooter is located, a careful stalk is planned into shooting position. The terrain can range from steep forested slopes to open alpine, and can be moderately challenging. Some degree of physical fitness or work up training is encouraged.

We strongly encourage clients not to bring personal firearms from home, especially if wishing to do any tourism while in Europe before or after the hunt. The outfitter has various quality rifle always available for clients, already included in the cost of the package. Rifles are usually bolt or slide action, with popular calibers being 6.5mm, .308, 30-06 or 8mm. Nearly all international clients have borrowed rifles rather then bring them.

Archery hunting is not legal in Romania.

Transylvania’s Carpathian arc represent Europe’s largest unfragmented wilderness region, and are a truly stunning and legendary mountain range. Chamois here inhabit various habitat types ranging from steep hardwood dominated slopes (roughly 3000-5000 feet elevation), to open rocky alpine environments (roughly 6500-8500 feet elevation). The terrain can be moderately challenging and involves some hiking and climbing to navigate, but is extremely beautiful, wildlife rich and rewarding.

With a long open season and a wide band of hunting elevations, fall weather in the Carpathians can vary. Early-mid-season hunts (Sept.-mid Oct.) are milder, with less likelihood of snow, and overnight temperatures still generally above freezing, even in higher elevations. Mid-late season hunts (Mid Oct. - Nov.) always have the potential for some snow and colder temperatures especially in higher elevations. Late Nov. can occasionally see enough snow depth to limit access. A quality layered clothing system is recommended, ready for a range of temperatures and weather types.

Enjoy lovely alpine bed & amp; breakfast style chalets during this hunt. Located on the edges of a small mountain towns, the accommodations offer clients all amenities with private bed and bathrooms, Wi-Fi, relaxing common areas, ornate wooden verandas and gracious catering hosts! These classic Transylvanian chalets are all conveniently located within short proximity of excellent hunting areas, curbing commuting time which is better spent hunting!

Food is homemade, hearty and local as well as traditional and delicious. A light quick breakfast is available before heading out, and lunches are assembled and packed for the field. Dinners are homecooked and back at the lodge, including items such as soups, fresh bread, chops, schnitzels, stews, cheeses and smoked sausages. It’s an interesting and incredible line up, with Romania lending its roots
to blends of Austro-Hungarian, Turkish and Slavic ingredients. Local beer, wine and plum brandy rounds out each meal nicely, if desired.

Destination City: Depending on hunting area, hunters may be asked to arrive at either Sibiu, Cluj Napoca, or the Timisoara airports in Romania, where they will be greeted by the outfitter or his staff. The various Chamois hunting areas are roughly 1-5 hour’s drive depending. If combining with Fallow deer, the arrival or departure city will ultimately include Timisoara, near the Fallow grounds.

Travel Suggestions: Sibiu or Cluj Napoca are easily reached by any various airlines, but Lufthansa tends to offer excellent connections from either Munich or Frankfurt, Germany. This is the same for Timisoara where hunters either begin or conclude the hunt if combining with Fallow deer.

After a successful hunt in Romania, trophies are generally left with the outfitter for international clients. Skulls are cleaned and the outfitter salts all the hides at no charge. After the season the outfitter will deliver all the trophies with select taxidermists who can either do the complete work, or prep, permit and crate trophies for shipping and coordinate with European shipping agents. General turnaround time to delivery is approximately 9 months.
