MORE INFO
The season spans from August to December, with most hunts typically occurring between September and into the November rut. A very popular time to hunt is October, which combines generally reliable weather and pre-rut conditions for Alpine Chamois in the Southern Alps.
Additional Alpine Chamois may be available depending on regional quotas and permit availability. Trophy fees only apply upon successful harvest or confirmed wounding/loss.
While Red Stag and Wild Boar may technically be available, the focus here is very much on delivering the best possible Alpine Chamois hunting experience.
These are traditional spot-and-stalk mountain hunts, designed to match the hunter’s ability. Plan for early breakfasts and departures, and full days spent in the heights, packing a freshly made bagged lunch. Hunters glass open slopes and traverse ridgelines with experienced local stalkers, either from foot trails or roadside vantage points. Physical difficulty varies significantly depending on the selected hunting area and desired level of challenge. Guides are flexible and work with each client to create a comfortable yet rewarding chamois hunting experience.
European clients tend to bring their own rifles. North American clients, however, are encouraged to rent their guide’s rifle (€50/day, which includes ammunition). While shots up 300+ yards are possible, most opportunities occur closer to 200 yards. Quality European optics mounted on high-end European-style mountain rifles such as Blasers, Styers, or Sakos are typical, often in 6.5mm to .30 caliber chamberings. Archery cannot be practiced in Slovenia for Chamois hunting due to the regulations.
The Southern Alps of Slovenia are rugged and beautiful, offering panoramic views, limestone crags, alpine meadows, and valleys blanketed in fall colors during October. Wildlife such as Roe Deer, Red Stag, and Wild Boar may also be seen, but are not the focus of these very specialized trophy Alpine Chamois hunts.
During an October Alpine Chamois hunt in Slovenia, expect crisp, cool mornings and mild afternoons, typical in the Alps. Snow is possible at the highest elevations. Generally, temperatures rarely dip below freezing, but the weather can change quickly, so an intelligent layering system of light-weight, high-quality garments is encouraged. An equipment list can be provided upon booking to assist hunters with planning. Early-season hunts (Aug-Sept) can occur in warmer temperatures and at higher elevations. While late season hunts (Nov-Dec), tend to see colder, foggier, and snowier weather, often occurring at slightly lower elevations.
These Slovenian Alpine Chamois hunts are based out of traditional and charming B&B chalets, featuring private rooms, hot showers, WiFi, and hearty home-cooked meals in a downstairs restaurant or common pub-type common area. Often tucked away on the outskirts of a small alpine village and nestled along a creek, surrounded by flower gardens and stunning alpine views. Yes, hunters can expect both comfort and a unique cultural experience at the lodge, despite being a highly specialized mountain hunt for Alpine Chamois!
Hearty, local, and delicious food ensures all hunters are well fed while searching for Chamois in the Slovenian Alps! Breakfasts are quick and light to get hunters out the door in the early mornings. A hefty packed lunch is provided for the field, and hot, homemade dinners are waiting for hunters upon return in the evenings! Dinners consist of locally sourced and prepared soups, stews, sausages, schnitzels, dumplings, potatoes, breads, and vegetables. All dishes and ingredients reflect Slovenia’s unique culinary heritage.
Destination City: Hunters are asked to arrive at the International Airport in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where they are met by either the outfitter or a hired driver, and commute to the lodge at the base of the mountains. Slovenia’s Chamois hunting areas are roughly a 1-2 hours’ drive north or northwest of the airport.
Travel Suggestions: Ljubljana is a beautiful city, and easily reached with direct flights from some of Europe's most popular airports. Best connections typically occur through Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, London, Warsaw, or Istanbul.
Upon successful completion of a Slovenian Alpine Chamois hunt, capes are preserved, and the skulls are boiled and whitened locally by the guides. Next, the trophies are delivered to a local taxidermist, who can either prep trophies for shipping or do the complete taxidermy work. At this stage, trophy shipping and/or European taxidermy options can be arranged directly between the hunters and the taxidermist, with assistance from the outfitter.
