MORE INFO
Early season for Roe Deer hunting in Romania spans the month of May as the bucks have shed their velvet, and until the vegetation becomes too tall for effective hunting. Rut hunts commence in late July until mid Aug. With respect to Red Stag, Fallow Deer or Chamois combos, Roe Deer season is technically open until mid-Oct. They drop their antlers starting in Nov.
-Additional Roe Deer: Can be taken as targets of opportunity for a flat-rate trophy fee basis, provided permits are still available.
-Wild Boars: Can either be taken as targets of opportunity, or hunted over bait or with thermals on a flat rate trophy fee basis.
-Red Stag: Must be booked as a primary species hunt during the Sept roar, while Roe Deer season is still open.
-Fallow Deer: Must be booked as a primary species hunt during the Oct rut, while Roe Deer season closes mid Oct.
-Carpathian Chamois: Must be booked as a primary species hunt in Sept./Oct. while Roe deer season is still open.
Roe Deer hunting in Romania comes standard at 4 day (x8 outing) packages with a total of x4 morning and x4 evening outings. Greet your guide each morning and afternoon at the lodge. Early season hunts are more spot and stalk. Cover ground in search of Roe bucks morning and evening, or focus on a certain pre-scouted buck, seeing as Roe Deer have small, (1 km sq approx.) home territories. During the rut hunts, calling is very effective and bucks are hard-wired to respond. Call in areas with known big bucks, mainly by slow stalking and short calling sequences. Or occasionally hunt from a high seat in a strategic area. Physically the terrain is flat, and not strenuous to navigate, making it possible for hunters of every fitness level.
We strongly encourage clients not to bring personal firearms from home, especially if wishing to do any tourism while in Europe before or after Roe Deer hunting in Romania. The outfitter has various quality rifles always available for clients, already included in the cost of the package. Rifles are usually bolt or slide action, with popular calibers being 6.5mm, .308, 30-06 or 8mm. Nearly all international clients have borrowed rifles rather than bring them.
Archery Roe Deer hunting in Romania is not legal.
Roe Deer do well in a wide variety of environments. Foothills, forests, and farm country all hold good populations. They thrive along “edge” habitat, with the best concentrations of deer occurring where rich agriculture meets the hardwood forests of the western Carpathian foothills. Mixed high-density crops such as corn, cereals, vegetables, canola, sunflowers, or pastures are connected by brushy fence lines, irrigation ditches, or streams. These meander through woodlots ultimately backing up to unfragmented foothill forests. The terrain is generally flat or gently rolling until reaching the foothills. Hunters are sure to encounter iconic European non-target species such as Hares, Pheasants, Hedgehogs, Foxes, Ferrets, and Badgers.
Being on a different schedule than other Deer in the northern hemisphere, prime Roe Deer hunting windows include May into early June (considered the early season), as well the rut, which occurs in late July and early August. While Roe Deer season is technically open from May to mid Oct, the crops or grass are simply too tall mid-summer. The rut coincides with early harvest, at which point various crop fields have been cut and visibility is partially restored. Summer months can be warm in Romania, and expect some mosquitoes in the forest at dusk. Rain is not prevalent but always possible while Roe Deer hunting in Romania, especially in the spring.
One of the highpoints of Roe Deer hunting in Romania with this package is the food and lodgings! Stay at the base of the western Carpathian foothills in the rural countryside near all the hunting areas. The lodge was originally a medieval aged mill, converted into a lovely rustic hotel, complete with private rooms and full ensuite bathrooms, antique furniture, Wi-Fi, quiet common areas, verandas, rose gardens, and a small river flowing through it all. What completes it is a wonderful adjoining bar and restaurant. People travel from across Europe to eat here, and our hunters simply order 3 meals each day off the menu - all included in the Roe Deer hunting package price.
Food here is wholesome, locally-sourced, traditional, and delicious. A quick and light breakfast spread is available before heading out. Lunch and dinner can be ordered off the menu. Popular items are stone oven personal pizzas, chops, schnitzels, stews, soups, cheeses, cold cuts and the various sharing platters. It’s an interesting and incredible line up, lending its roots to blends of Austro-Hungarian, Turkish, and Slavic ingredients. Local beer, wine, and plum brandy rounds out each meal nicely, available at the bar if desired.
Destination City: Hunters are asked to arrive at the Timisoara International Airport in Romania, where they will be greeted by the outfitter or his staff. The primary areas for Roe Deer hunting in Romania are roughly 1-2 hour’s drive north and east of Timisoara.
Travel Suggestions: Timisoara is easily reached by any various airlines, but Lufthansa tends to offer excellent connections from either Munich or Frankfurt, Germany.
After successfully Roe Deer hunting in Romania, trophies are generally left with the outfitter for international clients. Skulls are cleaned and the outfitter salts all the hides at no charge. After the season, the outfitter will deliver all the trophies with select taxidermists who can either do the complete work, or prep, permit, and crate trophies for shipping and coordinate with European shipping agents. General turnaround time to delivery is approximately 9 months.
