ROMANIA - WILD BOAR HUNT (COMBO)

The season for Wild Boar hunting in Romania is technically open year-round, but prime time for trophy hunts seeking big Boars would be late Nov. to early May. If wishing to combine with quality hunts for wild Pheasants, prime dates are Nov.-Jan. before Pheasant season closes.

- Pheasant: Can be booked as a combo hunt during prime Nov. - Jan. dates, with an excellent population of wild birds.
- Roe Deer: Can be booked as a primary species hunt for prime dates in May/Aug.
- Red Stag: Can be booked as a primary species hunt for peak roar dates in Sept.
- Fallow Deer: Can be booked as a primary species hunt for peak rut dates in Oct.
- Carpathian Chamois: Can be booked as a primary species hunt for prime dates in Sept./Oct.

Arrive at the Timisoara airport, greet the outfitter or driver, and pass through the preserved gothic provincial city of Arad to reach the lodge. The plan for each day depends on hunter preferences. Trophy Wild Boar hunts in Romania are usually conducted in the evenings and into the night. In this case, mornings and middays can be relaxed, unless there are plans to hunt Pheasants on late fall/early winter Boar combo hunts. A great option for the mornings, as the Wild Boars are largely nocturnal. It’s like two hunts in one! Boar hunts start in the evening over bait, and if a shooter does not present himself the guides slowly stalk the hills aided by night vision and thermal equipment. Rifles are often rigged with spotlights for the moment of truth. It’s certainly an experience and the rewards can be huge! Pheasants are hunted with various pointer breeds, blockers, and beaters covering strategic strips of cover crops, which concentrates wild Pheasants this time of year.

We strongly encourage clients not to bring personal firearms from home, especially if wishing to do any tourism while in Europe before or after hunting in Romania. The outfitter has various quality rifles always available for clients, already included in the Wild Boar hunting package price. Rifles are usually bolt or slide action, with popular calibers being 6.5mm, .308, 30-06 or 8mm. These rifles are also adapted with night vision scopes for Wild Boar hunting at night. Shotguns and ammo are also provided to all Pheasant combo hunters free of charge. Nearly all international clients have borrowed firearms rather than bring them.

Wild Boars require thick cover to feel safe during the day, descending into crop fields at night if seasonal natural foods like grubs, apples, and walnuts are unavailable. They can inhabit a variety of environments ranging from farm country to alpine mountains, but some of the best concentrations are where rich agriculture meets the dense forests of the foothills. Locust, Walnut, Oak, and Beech trees are prevalent. The farmland is generally flat while the foothills can offer some steeper forested slopes and ravines.

The season for Wild Boar hunting in Romania is technically open year-round, and the weather varies depending on the month. Late fall and early winter have leaves down, and occasional light dustings of snow, whereas accumulation only begins in December. Rain isn’t typical unless it’s unseasonably warm, and temperatures tend to hover around the freezing mark. Mid-winter January and February hunts generally see snow and temperatures slightly below the freezing mark. March to May brings warmer spring temperatures, with green-up commencing mid-late April. A pleasant time to be out in the Carpathian foothills.

Some of the high points of this Romanian hunting trip are the food and lodgings! Stay at the base of the western Carpathian foothills in the rural countryside near many of the hunting areas. The lodge was originally a Medieval aged mill, converted into a lovely rustic hotel, complete with private rooms and full ensuite bathrooms, antique furniture, Wi-Fi, quiet common areas, verandas, a rose garden, and a small river flowing through it all. What completes it is a wonderful adjoining bar and restaurant. People travel from across Europe to eat here, and our hunters simply order 3 meals each day off the menu - all included in the hunt package price.

Food here is wholesome, locally-sourced, traditional, and delicious. A quick and light breakfast spread is available before heading out. Lunch and dinner can be ordered off the menu. Popular items are stone oven personal pizzas, chops, schnitzels, stews, soups, cheeses, cold cuts, and the various sharing platters. It’s an interesting and incredible line-up, lending its roots to blends of Austro-Hungarian, Turkish, and Slavic ingredients. Local beer, wine, and plum brandy round out each meal nicely, available at the bar if desired.

Destination City: Hunters are asked to arrive at the Timisoara International Airport in western Romania, where they will be greeted by the outfitter or his staff. The Wild Boar hunting areas are roughly 1-2 hour’s drive north and east of Timisoara.

Travel Suggestions: Timisoara is easily reached by various airlines, but Lufthansa tends to offer the best connections from either Munich or Frankfurt, Germany.

After successfully Wild Boar hunting in Romania, trophies are generally left with the outfitter for international clients. Skulls/tusks are cleaned and the outfitter salts all hides. After the season the outfitter will deliver all the trophies with select taxidermists who can either do the complete work, or prep, permit, and crate trophies for export and coordinate with European shipping agents. The general turnaround time to delivery is approximately 9 months.
