If you are looking for something cool, different, or off-season, consider the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s big island for an incredible destination! Catering to those visiting Hawaii, these free-range hunts only compliment such a vacation. Black Sheep are unique to Hawaii and only available on the Big Island. Introduced in the 1700’s by captain Vancouver, these sheep are plentiful and very well established. The season is technically open year-round, and they rut twice annually, but winter and spring is primetime.

In addition to Black Sheep, Mouflon Cross sheep are also available, and they rut in September. Feral/Spanish or Ibex Goats are also very plentiful and make for a popular hunt option, open year-round. Wild Rio Grande Turkeys populations are healthy offering an excellent additional or stand-alone hunt in March. Upland bird hunts are also offered, with California Quail, and the very unique Kaalij and Urkel’s Franklin Phesants available to collector hunters, with the prime month being January.

Big game fishing charters are another great option, with species like Blue or Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Mahi. Full-day charters on 40–50-foot vessels are available from late winter to early fall, and can accommodate or be split by a group of up to 6 anglers. A Kona classic, and home to some of the world’s biggest world record Marlin!

Let’s not forget the destination however, which alone is worth the trip. This enchanted volcanic island is not only beautiful and bristling with incredible things to see and do, but the logistics are also relatively quick and easy. Kailua-Kona is a historic and dynamic coastal city, with an impressive line-up of wonderful restaurants, activities and breathtaking vistas. Enjoy Snorkeling, spearfishing, Manta ray dives, surfing, hiking and more. Or choose to simply relax on the beach, doing nothing aside from listening to the waves crash with a delicious coconut Mai-tai in hand…
