USA: HAWAII - HAWAIIAN BLACK SHEEP HUNT

While technically open year-round, prime trophy Black Hawaiian Sheep hunts occur from January to June. Mouflon Cross Sheep rut in September, which is an excellent time to hunt them. Wild Turkey season is most prime in March and early April. Fishing is prime from February to September.

- Additional Black Hawaiian Sheep: Can be taken on a flat-rate trophy fee, and comes with x1 extra hunting day.
- Mouflon Cross Sheep: Usually booked as a 2-day priority species.
- South Pacific Wild Turkey: Can be booked as an add-on in March and comes with x1 extra hunting day.
- Big Game Fishing: Target Blue/Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, and Mahi from a 40+ foot vessel. February to Sept. is peak season, and full day charters can accommodate up to 6 guests.

These full-day Black Hawaiian Sheep hunting packages are simple, yet action packed, and can accommodate hunters of every fitness level. Hunts occur on strategic, private ranches, that otherwise see virtually no other hunting pressure. Start the day by cruising the various ranch roads accessing the properties in search of Sheep, stopping to glass at various key vantage points. The Sheep are plentiful and often in large flocks. The challenge lies in finding an old heavy ram, and approaching into shooting range despite all the sentinel eyes. The land is often broken with sufficient clumps of vegetation to facilitate a careful stalk with typical shooting distances inside of 200 yards.

Mouflon Cross Sheep hunts are similar, but typically require more looking around. Turkey hunts are classic, focussing on roosted birds at dawn, luring them into shotgun range with calling and decoy tactics, at times from a pop-up blind, other times just concealed in vegetation. Upland bird hunting is done in classic fashion with dogs, shotguns, and drives or pushes. All in all, this is a pleasant hunting experience, further complementing any Hawaiian vacation!

While the occasional client brings a personal firearm from home, nearly all our clients rent the outfitters rifle while Black Hawaiian Sheep hunting. They are precision, high-end, custom-built, light-weight rifles chambered in .28 Nosler or similar, crowned with quality optics and a bipod.

Archery Sheep hunting is legal in Hawaii and welcomed, for those wishing to increase the challenge level of the hunt.

This is an active, dynamic and supremely beautiful volcanic island in the near geographic center of the Pacific Ocean. The east coast of the island breaks the Pacific weather and sees regular rainfall. Here the forest is lush and green almost year-round. The west coast however, where the most infrastructure and the Black Hawaiian Sheep hunting areas are located, is an ecological rain-shadow which sees a generally warm, dry, and more sparsely vegetated landscape. Ribbons of trees, old lava fields, and grassy meadows form a unique coastal savannah-type environment. The beaches are varied and plentiful, and the higher elevations where most Hawaiian Black Sheep are encountered, are cooler and, at times, more vegetated. Occasional coffee, fruit, or Macadamia nut tree plantations and pasture ground comprise some of the Black Hawaiian Sheep hunting areas. A dizzying line-up of flora and fauna species, both indigenous and introduced, now share this remote island and call it home.

Hawaii has a generally static annual climate, with no real defined seasons. Conditions vary greatly between the east and west sides of the island however. The eastern side is more vegetated and sees much more rainfall, while the west coast (where the majority of the hunts take place) experiences a rain shadow and receives radiating sunsets. Typically, Black Hawaiian Sheep hunting conditions are warm and dry. Cool dewy mornings give way to warm afternoons. The evenings and overnight cool down however. Rain is generally unlikely, aside perhaps from a few isolated clouds. This is a lovely, fair-weather hunt!

Clients provide their own accommodations while Black Hawaiian Sheep hunting. The Kona coast is teeming with hotels or Airbnbs to choose from. Every option is possible. Most hunts take place along the western coast of the island, in close proximity to the bulk of the best accommodations, beaches, and nightlife options, facilitating hunt logistics. If renting an Airbnb, many come with full kitchens allowing hunters to freeze meat and trophies and prepare their harvest for dinner, completing the experience!

Meals are not included in this hunt package price. Snack items like candy, fruit, energy bars, bottled water, and Gatorade on ice are good items to bring to help hunt hard all day, if needed. Hotels offer complimentary breakfasts, and Kailua-Kona has countless great restaurants to explore for dinner! If staying in an Airbnb, many have full kitchens. There are various grocery stores and markets, bristling with tantalizing local pacific ingredients, such as exotic fruit and fresh seafood, as well as any harvested game to complete this Big Island experience!

Destination City: Hunters are asked to arrive at the Kona International airport on Hawaii’s Big Island outside of Kailua-Kona. Hunters usually rent a car and settle into their accommodations, and coordinate either pick-up or a meeting place with the outfitter for the day of the Sheep hunt.

Travel Suggestions: Kailua-Kona is easily reached by multiple airlines offering non-stop service from many North American or Pacific cities directly to Kona International. Some international flights may be required to connect in Honolulu. A rental car while on the island is highly encouraged.

Please be advised that there is no taxidermist on the Big Island, and any clients wishing to directly return with their trophies or meat after successfully Sheep hunting in Hawaii should plan on flying home with them as checked luggage. None of the species require any special permits or CITES. Trophies are carefully caped and deboned in the field, and can be kept safely frozen (either at client accommodations or with the outfitter), until departure. Clients purchase a cooler for the flight home, and can coordinate with the outfitter for trophy/meat pick-up near the airport.
